about Massachusetts Institute of Technology
The Mission of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology is to advance knowledge and educate students in science, technology, and other areas of scholarship that will best serve the nation and the world in the 21st century. We are also encouraged to bring knowledge to bear on the great challenges of the world.
The Institute is an independent, coeducational, private endowed University, organized into five streams (architecture and planning; engineering; Humanities, arts, and social sciences; management; and science). It has several faculty members, more than 11000 1000 undergraduate and graduate students and more than 130,000 alumni life.
At its founding in 1861, MIT is innovation education, the community of hands-on problem solvers in love with basic science and eager to make the world a better place. Today, the spirit still guides how we educate students on campus and how we form the new digital learning technologies to make MIT accessible lessons by millions of learners around the world.
MIT interdisciplinary Spirit of exploration has sparked a lot of scientific breakthroughs and technological advances. Some examples: the first chemical synthesis of penicillin and vitamin a. the development of radar and the creation of inertial guidance systems. The discovery of magnetic core memory, which allows the development of digital computers. Contribution to the human genome project. The discovery of the Quark. The invention of electronic spreadsheets and encryption systems that enable e-commerce. The Creation Of GPS. Pioneer of 3D printing. The concept of the universe.
The field of research and education currently include:
- Digital learning: nanotechnology, energy will come
- Environment: climate adaptation, and global water and food security
- Big data: cybersecurity, robotics and artificial intelligence
- Human health: including cancer, HIV, Alzheimer's, autism and dyslexia
- Biological Engineering and technology CRISPR,
- Poverty reduction: advanced manufacturing; and innovation and entrepreneurship.
MIT impact also on the work of our graduates. One way MIT graduates drive progress is to start a company that provides new ideas to the world. The new study estimates that as of 2014, live MIT alumni have launched more than 30000 active companies, creating 4.6 million jobs and generate about $ 1.2 trillion in annual revenue. Taken together, these "MIT nation" on par with the 10 largest economies in the world.
Education
Includes five schools of architecture and planning; Engineering; Humanities, arts, and social sciences; Management; and science-and more than 30 departments and education programs at MIT includes more than just science and technology.
